The MicroStar connects to your PC using a serial port, offend called a comm port. This communications uses a protocol called RS 232. The schematics for the MicroStar show how this cable is made assuming that you have used all the connectors that I have designed into my original system. In case you want to connect your encoder to your PC using different connectors you will need to know the connections from the encoder PC board to the 9 pin D connector on your PC. The table below defines the connections:
J7 DB9
1 2
2 3
6 5
Most PCs no longer come with comm ports but you can get low cost USB to comm port adapters. Additionally rev 5.0 and later encoders have the USB adapters build into the encoder. The communications is still RS 232 but you don't need any additional hardware.
